She is Twelve!

Yes, A turned 12 years old a week ago. Time flies... I'm starting to experience what other parents have experienced, she is embarassed to be held by me! Oh no! ha ha We were in the mall and I wanted to hold her hand and guide her through the crowded lanes and she said "Mom, don't hold my hand." Oh my gosh, I almost died! *sigh* But I know I'll live...barely. :)

She would rather spend time with her friends or do things on her own. Just last month, we let her watch a movie with her friends. I drove her to the theater and waited with her until her friends came. We let her go as long as her friend S is going, we know her and her family. I also made sure to lecture her to be aware of her surroundings and look for the exit signs inside the theater just in case there is an emergency. This was one of those times where she needs her own cell phone; I let her use mine so we have a means of communicating with her.

How long does this teen years last, is it really until 18 years old and then they'll be your best friend?

"I Want to be a Fireman"

This is what my 6 year old son told me last night, while we were working on his All About Me project for school. I wonder where he got that idea since there are no firefighters in the family. I asked him why he wants to be one and he just game me this sweet smile. I'm just thankful that at least he has an idea of what he wants to be when he's grown up. I know of some kids who are much older than him and they can't give you an answer if you ask them that same question. Choosing a profession is very hard. You need to love what you do for it to be a lifelong profession. Be it a doctor, a Maritime Lawyer or even a musician. That is what I'am always telling my kids, choose a job that you know you will enjoy doing, something you are interested in and you can never go wrong.

Are Girls Maturing Too Fast?

I have a pre-teen and have seen some of her classmates start to wear make-up. My daughter asked me a couple of months ago at what age can she start wearing make-up. I answered that we'll talk about it when she's 16 years old. I talked to a girl's mom and she mentioned that she's worried that her daughter is growing up too fast. Her girl came down ready for school one day and was wearing green eyeshadow. She asked her to go back up to her room and take it off.
When is the right time for girls to start wearing make-up? I think Middle School is still too young to start. Plus, I'm worried that using make-up too soon will make us look for the best acne treatment available. Geez...time flies by so fast!

A New Science Teacher

It has only been 3 months into the school year when we heard that my daughter's science teacher and the 8th grade's homeroom adviser is quitting. What a surprise! It's sudden and from what I've heard is that she is a new grandmother. Taking care of your grandchild is a good enough reason to retire, especially with the high cost of child care. Now, the new science teacher is a man who likes to wear bow ties. He reminds me of a professor in the Harry Potter movies since he also likes to wear scarves. He was a high school teacher and when he retired from teaching, he was a teacher in a Catholic school too. I hope he is as good as he is on paper. My daughter is in Middle school and she needs a very good foundation in the sciences to succeed in high school.

Are They Getting Everything They Need?

If you are a parent, then I'm sure you experienced a time when one child becomes picky with food.

I am having that problem right now. My 6-year old son is so picky these days. I still cook the same dishes that he 'used' to like and eat. Nowadays he wouldn't even touch it or try a little bite. What happened to this little guy? I do not want him to eat sandwiches everytime he doesn't like what is on the table and I will not cook a special meal just for him. Dh said that he is just going through a phase, I hope he doesn't stay long in it or else it will drive me crazy. I give him multivitamins just so that he will not lack those important nutrients. Do you have a picky eater in your household? Have they grown out of it or not?

Playing Favorites?

I know parents cringe if someone suggests that they favor one child over the other. But is there some truth to it? There are some days when I find myself comparing my two children. I did not want to admit it and I still don't but sometimes, I feel closer to one than the other. Could it be because of personalities? It is not that I love one more, because I know that I love them both the same; they came from my body after all. I don't know how to explain it, it's just a feeling. I still remember my sister complaining that I am my father's favorite. I don't want my kids to ever think that I favor one. :\

Price of Gifts is Directly Proportional to Age

Isn't it true? The older the child is, the more expensive the gift that they want. My eldest is now 11 and will turn 12 early next year. She is not into 'toys' anymore. She mentioned that she wants either a cell phone or an IPod touch for Christmas, maybe a game or two for the DSi and the Wii. It is getting harder to shop for her, and let's not even talk about clothes. Dh feels we are lucky that she is not into shopping while I, on the other hand, kind of wishes she is. It would've been nice to go shopping with her.

Now that Christmas is approaching, I have relatives and close friends asking me what to give her. Is it okay to tell them to give her gift cards or cash? Kids these age are picky. Gone are the days where you can give them any popular toy and they will thank you profusely.

A New Pair of Uggs for Her

Boy, her feet grows longer each day! I had to get her a new pair of boots this year. Her old boots, a classic Ugg does not fit anymore. At least, she was able to use it for two years. This new pair I got for her is the Bailey Triple Button in chocolate. I like this style, she can wear it folded like the photo or pulled up. The Ugg boots are very comfortable, you won't trip over stair rods or slip on icy sidewalks. I hope she gets to use it for a couple of years. Well, since we're almost the same shoe size, I'll be able to borrow it from her and she can borrow mine.

When do Teens Become Responsible?

Hmm, is the answer 'not fast enough"? I hear you. Mine is just a tween but she is already driving me crazy. I just have to remind myself that her brain neurons are not yet wired completely, hence the attitude. I find myself saying the same things over and over again every single day. I should get a voice recorder and just play it whenever the time calls for it. It'll save me effort yaking. yak yak yak. ha ha I wonder if boys this age are the same?

Growing Teens

My daughter is now a 'tween' and I am trying to instill in her proper eating habits. Yeah, right! At this stage, they want to eat junk foods for snack. I don't want her to find herself at a weight that she is not happy about. I don't want her to have an eating disorder either and end up looking for all natural diet pills just to lose that extra weight.

I hope that talking to her about eating healthy and healthy living will keep her in line. I know that as long as I keep on reminding her about it, sooner or later, she'll catch on.

He is Coming Tonight!

Yes he is.. His name is Cooper, it is his 'original name' and the kids liked it so we decided to keep his name. He is a pure bred Bichon Frise and he comes from a line of champions. Quite a pedigree! We have the house all ready for him, this is just like making the house baby proof! Although this time, we have to make sure there are no wires hanging about. Good thing we don't have any medical equipment in the house, less wires to deal with. We also bought his food, he eats Avoderm all-natural puppy food; toys, and other stuff. He is coming in tonite via American Airlines. I hope there are no delays in his flight. He will be the kids' first dog and they are excited to meet him. I received a call from Cooper's breeder this morning and she gave me her phone number and email address just in case we have any questions regarding Cooper. I'm so glad that he comes from a good home, then he won't have trouble adjusting to ours.

She's a Tween!!

My baby girl A turned 11 years old yesterday!! She is now officially a TWEEN! *shudder* She's already been exhibiting tween symptoms for a year now and I know my white hair has been sprouting faster! LOL Pretty soon, before I know it, she'll be starting Driver's Ed! I don't want to think about the car insurance when she starts driving! It'll probably go up the roof!

No to Motorcycles

"When I grow up, I want to ride a motorcycle" said my son. "Uh, I don't think so honey." I will not let him get one as long as he is my dependent. When he's an adult, then all I can do is hope and pray that he doesn't buy a motorcycle. Those things are dangerous. I'm worried about other drivers, there are a lot of crazy ones out there. If one gets in an accident, the consequences can be serious; just ask a San Jose motorcycle accident attorney. I just hope that T changes his mind when he's all grown up.

What? Why?

Kids and their never-ending questions. You gotta love them! Sometimes, my 5 year old will ask me a question that is so silly I don't even know how to answer it. So what do I do? I make something up that is also as silly as the question and he ends up laughing. Kids are naturally curious so they ask questions. Sometimes though parents get too busy to pay them any attention. I also try to avoid watching shows that aren't suitable for kids when they're in my bedroom. It's okay if its a question about what colon cleansers are but I don't want to answer if they ask what the KY jelly is for.

Tattletale

Yup, that's my son according to his sister. LOL My daughter said that he always gets her in trouble. It's funny actually. I'll hear the pitter patter of his small feet then followed with "Mom, A is so and so." How can siblings be so different when they came from the same parents? It just amazes me. My son T is so laid back and fun loving while daughter A is always serious and a little high strung. They are little people with big personalities. I wonder if this will be their personality when they're adults or will it still change over the years? Anyway, back to being a tattletale, do you think I should tell my son to stop doing this? Of course I would want to know everything that's happening but on the other hand, I don't want him keep on doing this if it will get him in trouble when he's an adult. What do you think?

Shopping for Children

Life definitely changed when I had children. Nowadays, when I go shopping, I tend to buy things for my kids first. It's amazing at how expensive children's clothes and shoes are. A pair of shoes can be as expensive as those for adults. Of course, there are products that are inexpensive but would you rather buy something cheap and have it fall apart after a couple of months or get something that is worth its' price? That's why I always shop around for the best price and shopping online is very convenient for me. In fact, I was able to get a pair of Ugg boots for my daughter for only $75 and the shipping is free.

I've been buying things online even before my daughter was born. I prefer it this way since it is easier to compare prices. I've bought clothes, furnitures, children's books, appliances and what not. You can also buy text books online and if you prefer used text books, there is a website for that too. One thing to consider when shopping online is the price of shipping and handling. If the seller is out of state, usually you don't have to pay tax so the shipping and handling balances it out. For the convenience though, online shopping cannot be beat. Do you prefer to shop online or do it the traditional way?

Happy Valentine's Day

Of Dentists and Doctors

No cavities. That's the good news for both my kids. The pediatric dentist gave their mouths a clean bill of health. My son, who's 4, even had a mouth x-ray and the dental technician was so impressed with him. He sat still and did what he was asked, very rare for someone his age. I think it's because he's been coming with us ever since he was very little. He saw his sister sit on the dental chair twice a year so when it was his turn, he knew what to expect. The dentist mentioned in passing that he's going to give us a referral to an orthodontist at the second half of the year. My daughter's teeth is fine overall but she has one tooth that is a little off. She also has a tiny overbite. If we want her to have that perfect smile, then we should consider braces. Of course she didn't want to wear braces. The good thing is there's already one girl in her class who just had her braces last month, so at least if my daughter will wear braces she won't be the first and only one.

Speaking of my daughter, she's also due for her yearly physical. She had a male doctor ever since she was little. He's the best pediatrician in town that's why I chose his practice. Now that my daughter is getting older, she said that she prefers to be seen by a female doctor. I'm glad that they were able to accomodate her request. She started seeing this female doctor in the same office. I can tell that my daughter has started puberty. She's already 4'11" at only 10 years old. A couple more inches and she'll be as tall as I am! I'm thankful that at this stage, she's not like other girls who are already into make-up and boys.

What's in Their Packed Lunch?

Most of the times, my kids get hot lunch from school. There are days however, one of them doesn't like what's being offered that day. Then I have to prepare a packed lunch that day. The other day, my son asked to bring lunch from home. I gave him a couple of options like the usual sandwich (peanut butter, Nutella, jelly or ham), Foccacia style pizza, Hot Pocket sub or chicken nuggets. I also packed sliced apples for his lunch. I rinse the sliced apple in water with some lemon juice so it won't turn brown. The Oreos you see here is for his snack along with the chocolate drink. My sons' lunch bag has two compartments as seen here which is convenient.
Do you have any suggestions on what to pack for a kids' lunch? They don't have the use of a microwave so it has to be something that can be eaten cold or at room temperature.

Before and After

This is a photo of my baby before he had a hair cut. I asked dh to bring him to the hair salon for a cut. They called me on their way home and dh said that I'm going to be surprised when I see T because his hair is now very short.

This is what he looked like when he came home. He lost his curly Qs. :o( Dh said that the hairdresser asked if he wants clippers or scissors. He chose clippers and was surprised when she started taking off T's hair. I'm still getting used to seeing my son with very short hair. I'm glad that he looks good and his head is shaped nicely. LOL Oh well, at least I don't have to worry about his hair standing up every morning before school. :o)
